The Roane County Commission is considering raising the Transfer Tax.

Senate Bill 433, passed by the Legislature on April 7, 2017, permits counties to increase the excise tax on the privilege of transferring real property.  The current rate for this particular tax is $1.10 per $500 of value.  The new legislation permits counties to raise the amount up to $1.65 per $500 of value.

These specific taxes are collected when real property changes hands for consideration and is usually paid by the seller (grantor) unless the buyer (grantee) accepts the document (deed) without the tax being paid, in which event the tax shall be paid by the buyer.

The Commissioners would like input from the public before they make a decision.  Please send your comments, questions or suggestions about this to the Roane County Commission at 200 Main Street  Spencer, WV 25276, fax (304) 927-0079 or e-mail
